What Is an FSC Code on BMW? CarPlay, Maps & Feature Unlocks Explained
FSC Code, Defined
An FSC (Freischaltcode, German for “enabling code”) is a VIN-specific unlock code that switches on a software feature already built into your BMW’s head unit. It is tied to your exact car and one specific feature — it will not work on any other vehicle.
What FSC Codes Unlock
- Apple CarPlay (FSC 143) — the most requested unlock, on NBT, NBTevo and EntryNav2.
- Map / navigation updates — each new map year needs a matching FSC.
- Apps, traffic and other head-unit features.
FSC codes apply to the head unit, which is why your unit generation matters — use our iDrive versions guide to identify yours.
How FSC Codes Are Generated and Applied
Each code is calculated from your VIN and the target feature, then delivered as a file. You apply it once via USB on the head unit, or in a quick remote session — no dealer visit and no hardware change. Because it is generated per car, an FSC for the wrong head unit cannot be reused.
