BMW Hidden Features You Can Code with E-Sys (F & G Series)

Your BMW Has More Features Than the Menu Shows

BMW builds one head unit, one body control module, one instrument cluster — and uses software flags to decide which features are enabled. The car shipped to the US might be physically identical to the car shipped to Germany, but the German version has the “Video in Motion” menu enabled and the US version does not. The hardware is the same.

E-Sys lets you flip those flags. The car already has the capability. You are just turning it on.

Here are 25 of the most popular hidden features BMW owners enable with E-Sys. None of these require hardware changes — they are all coding-only modifications.

Safety & Visibility

1. Auto-Fold Mirrors on Lock (F & G)

Mirrors fold in automatically when you lock the car, and unfold when you unlock. Most European cars do this from the factory. US cars often do not.

Module: FRM (Footwell Module) or IHKA depending on chassis.
FDL code: SPIEGEL_KOMFORT_EINKLAPPaktiv

2. Auto-Dimming Side Mirrors in Reverse

When you put the car in reverse, the passenger-side mirror tilts down so you can see the curb. Driver-side mirror can be added too.

Module: FRM
FDL code: SPIEGEL_NEIGEN_RUECKWAERTSaktiv

3. Disable the Seat-Belt Chime

The annoying chime when you start the car without your seatbelt buckled. Off. Forever.

Module: ACSM (Advanced Crash Safety Module)
FDL code: SBR_GURTSCHLOSS_FAHRER and SBR_GURTSCHLOSS_BEIFAHRERnicht_aktiv

4. Enable the Full Digital Speedometer

On cars with the digital instrument cluster (F30, G20, etc.), the speedometer can show the exact digital speed read-out in the center display.

Module: KOMBI
FDL code: BC_DIGITAL_Vaktiv

5. Coming-Home Lights with Auto-Delay

After you turn the car off and walk away, the headlights and tail lights stay on for a configurable time so you can see your driveway. BMW ships with a short delay; you can extend it to 60 seconds or longer.

Module: FRM or IHKA
FDL code: COMING_HOME_TIME60s (or your preference)

Comfort & Convenience

6. Video in Motion (VIM)

Watch video on the iDrive screen (DVD, USB video, CarPlay Netflix, etc.) while the car is moving. By default BMW locks video playback above 5 km/h for safety. You can change that.

Module: HU_NBT or HEAD_UNIT
FDL code: 3000_SPEED_LOCKunlimited (or video_speed_lock_valuenicht_aktiv)

Note: VIM is for off-road / passenger use. Check your local laws before using it on public roads.

7. Comfort Windows — Open/Close with Key Fob

Hold the unlock button on your key fob and all windows (and the sunroof, if equipped) roll down. Hold the lock button and they all close. Great for venting the cabin on a hot day.

Module: FRM or BDC
FDL code: FENSTERHEBER_KOMFORTaktiv

8. Comfort Sunroof with Key Fob

Same as above, for the sunroof. Tilt or full open/close from the fob.

Module: FRM or BDC
FDL code: SD_KOMFORTaktiv

9. Trunk Close from Fob

Hold the trunk button on the fob to close the power tailgate (instead of just opening it). Useful when your hands are full.

Module: HKFM (Heckklappen-Funktional-Modul)
FDL code: HKFM_SCHLIESSENaktiv

10. One-Touch Turn Signal (5 to 7 Flashes)

Tap the turn signal stalk and it flashes 5 times (US default) or 7 times (European default). Useful for lane changes on the highway.

Module: FRM or BDC
FDL code: TIPP_BLINKEN_ANZAHL7 (or your preference)

Display & iDrive

11. Enable CarPlay (Already Covered)

See the full CarPlay activation guide for details.

12. Add 3D Buildings to Navigation

On NBTevo and newer head units, 3D building models are loaded but disabled by default in the US. Enable them and the nav map looks substantially better.

Module: HU_NBT
FDL code: NAV_3D_BUILDINGSaktiv

13. Enable the iDrive Start-Up Animation

Replace the standard “BMW” splash screen with the M Performance logo, an Alpina logo, or your own custom image. Coded via the HMI module.

Module: HMI
FDL code: STARTUP_IMAGE → your preferred image path

14. Show Tire Pressure and Temperature in iDrive

Most F and G cars have tire pressure sensors but only show a low-pressure warning. E-Sys can enable the live readout in iDrive showing each tire’s pressure and temperature.

Module: IHKA or KOMBI
FDL code: RDC_DRUCK_TEMP_ANZEIGEaktiv

Sound & Audio

15. Enable the Burmaster / Harman Kardon EQ

If your car has the premium sound option but the EQ is hidden in iDrive, you can re-enable the full parametric equaliser and surround-sound settings.

Module: HU_NBT
FDL code: AUDIO_EQ_ANZEIGEaktiv

16. Enable the Auxiliary Heater via iDrive

On diesel and some petrol cars with the auxiliary heater option, the iDrive menu to start the heater remotely is hidden. Code it on and you can fire up the heater from the fob or the BMW Connected app.

Module: IHKA
FDL code: STANDHEIZUNGaktiv

Performance Feel (Cosmetic, Not Tuning)

17. Enable Launch Control on Non-M Cars

Most M cars have launch control. Many non-M cars have the same hardware capability, it is just coded out. Enabling it does not increase power but lets you launch the car from a standstill with optimal revs.

Module: DME
FDL code: LAUNCH_CONTROLaktiv

18. Show Power and Torque in the iDrive Display

Live horsepower and torque readouts in the iDrive “Sport Displays” menu.

Module: DME
FDL code: SPORTDISPLAY_POWER_TORQUEaktiv

19. Disable the Auto Start-Stop Memory

Auto Start-Stop (the engine shutting off at red lights) is on by default every time you start the car. Code the memory to remember your last setting.

Module: DME
FDL code: MSA_MEMORYaktiv

20. Exhaust Flap Always Open (M Cars Only)

On M cars with the electronically controlled exhaust flap, force it open at all times for maximum sound. Or force it closed for early-morning neighbourhoods.

Module: EFLM (Exhaust Flap Module)
FDL code: ABGASKLAPPEalways_open

Lighting

21. Enable the Welcome Light Carpet

When you unlock the car, the side mirrors project the BMW logo (or a custom image) onto the ground next to the car. A premium touch.

Module: FRM or BDC
FDL code: BEGRUESSUNGSLICHTaktiv

22. Adaptive Brake Lights Flash Under Hard Braking

Under emergency braking, the brake lights flash to warn drivers behind you. The hazard lights also turn on automatically.

Module: FRM or BDC
FDL code: BREMSE_WARNBLINKENaktiv

23. Daytime Running Lights Off (or On via Fog Lights)

European owners often prefer the fog lights as DRLs. US owners sometimes want DRLs disabled. Both are one FDL flag away.

Module: FRM or BDC
FDL code: TFL_DEAKTIVnicht_aktiv (off) or TFL_NEBELaktiv

Cluster Gauges & Readouts

24. Show Engine Oil Temperature in the Cluster

Live oil temperature read-out in the instrument cluster’s on-board computer display.

Module: KOMBI
FDL code: OELTEMPERATUR_ANZEIGEaktiv

25. Enable the G-Meter (Lateral G Display)

A live lateral-G gauge in the instrument cluster or iDrive. Useful for spirited driving or track days.

Module: DME
FDL code: G_METER_ANZEIGEaktiv

What to Code — and What Not to Code

Stick to the well-known features. Avoid “tuning” CAFDs that claim more power or different emissions behaviour — these are the ones most likely to fail inspection or trigger a check-engine light. E-Sys is a powerful tool, and with that power comes responsibility. Code confidently, save your SVT, and back out of anything that looks wrong.
