How to Fix ISTA+ ENET Connection Errors on BMW — Complete Guide

Why Your ISTA+ Won’t Connect via ENET

One of the most common issues BMW owners face after installing ISTA+ (Rheingold) is the software failing to establish a stable connection to the vehicle via the ENET cable. The system may read the VIN but hang indefinitely during vehicle identification, or fail to detect the vehicle altogether.

This guide walks through the three most critical fixes for ENET connection issues in ISTA+.

1. Static IP Configuration

The ENET cable uses a direct Ethernet connection between your laptop and your BMW’s OBD port. For this to work reliably, your laptop’s Ethernet adapter must be configured with a static IP address in the same subnet as the ENET interface.

Steps:

  1. Open Control Panel → Network and Sharing Center → Change adapter settings
  2. Right-click your Ethernet adapter and select Properties
  3. Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click Properties
  4. Set the IP address to 169.254.1.1
  5. Set the subnet mask to 255.255.0.0
  6. Leave the default gateway blank
  7. Click OK to save

2. EDIABAS Interface Configuration

ISTA+ relies on the EDIABAS.ini configuration file to determine which communication interface to use. If this file points to the wrong interface, ISTA+ won’t be able to communicate with the vehicle.

Steps:

  1. Navigate to your ISTA+ installation directory (typically C:EDIABAS or C:Program Files (x86)EDIABAS)
  2. Open the EDIABAS.ini file in Notepad
  3. Verify that the following line exists and is not commented out:
    Interface = ENET
  4. If the line reads Interface = REMOTE or anything else, change it to ENET
  5. Save the file and restart ISTA+

3. ISTA+ Internal Interface Selection

Even after configuring your network adapter and EDIABAS, ISTA+ itself needs to be set to the correct interface type.

Steps:

  1. Launch ISTA+ and go to Settings → Vehicle Interface
  2. Select “Dealer organisation local area ICOM/ENET” from the dropdown
  3. Save the settings and restart ISTA+
  4. Attempt to connect to your vehicle again

Bonus: Fixing MSVC++ Redistributable Errors

During ISTA+ installation, you may encounter an error like:
“Unable to execute file… 2019_VC_redist.x86.exe (CreateProcess failed; code 2)”

This means the Visual C++ Redistributable package failed to install as part of the setup. Download and install the latest Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable packages manually from Microsoft’s official website, then retry the installation.

Still having trouble?

If you’ve followed all three steps above and ISTA+ still won’t connect to your BMW, the issue may be with your ENET cable itself (faulty wiring) or your laptop’s Ethernet adapter (some USB-to-Ethernet adapters are incompatible).

When you purchase ISTA+ remote installation from KDR Coding, Kadir handles all of this configuration for you during the remote session. Browse our software packages →
